6 ways to Create Unstoppable Confidence
Are you struggling with building your confidence? Are you feeling too shy to put yourself out there, unsure of your capabilities or of how you feel about yourself? I feel you. I’ve had moments in my life where I wasn’t feeling confident, someone made me doubt myself, or I was just too nervous to put myself out there.
I was in a very toxic relationship in my twenties, where I was cheated on, verbally abused, and trapped in a cycle of emotional manipulation. After two years, I saw the light and walked away. It took courage to leave him. It took all the power and energy I had to remove this strange spell I had been under. My mum said she didn’t recognise me. That’s when I knew it was time to let go of everything I had been through and build my confidence again.
"Confidence is built like a muscle”
Your confidence isn’t a given. It’s built. Like a muscle. Over time, the more you invest in yourself and put yourself out there, the more it grows. Sounds easy right? Well in truth, it can be hard as it requires you to continually step out of your comfort zone.
What I’m trying to say is that I know what it feels like to have your heart crushed, your body questioned, to be shamed, judged, mistrusted, and feel so utterly low. You don’t have to stay where you are. You can proactively change. You get to take the driver's seat and change the course of your life.
Here are my 6 tools to help you build unstoppable confidence:
1) Take action
Before confidence grows, you need to use your courage no matter how uncomfortable it feels and step into confidence by taking action. I took action back then when I needed to. Trust that you deserve better, and make moves. Taking action means you stop just thinking about it, you follow your gut and make decisions that support change.
Our thoughts override us time and time again. “What if I can’t do it?”, “What if I look stupid?”, “What if people laugh at me?”, “ I won’t be good at that.”. Taking action changes our physical and neurological response to go and get it done. I love to use JFDI - Just F*cking Do It.
2) Create an alter ego
To drive your confidence you can create a name for yourself - like Beyonce did with Sasha Fierce. Create an alter ego, that person who does things, creates magic, and takes action to create their best life, joy and happiness. Ask yourself: “What would they do?”.
3) Prepare for anything that will arise
Whilst you can’t prepare for everything in life, you can help make things easier by preparing ahead of time for roadblocks. Setting your clothes out the day before, for example. Practice this and feel more confident in your actions.
4) Shift your perspective
Reframe your mindset around your limiting beliefs so you can step into the arena and go to the next level. Let go of your old self - the past doesn’t serve you. Be present for your needs in the moment to help you move forwards to a more confident you. If you stay in the old, you will remain where you are. So be curious, show up for yourself, discover what you’re capable of.
5) Try something new
There is nothing more important than all of the above that I can express more. Which is to try something new as often as possible. The more you put yourself out there the more that skill of confidence grows. You begin to feel uncomfortable and then the more you do it the more comfortable you get with it. I know it to be true because for as long as I remember it is something I have constantly been doing. I do it scared. I do it with fear. I do it anyway. Honestly? The best rewards have come from me taking those risks no matter how big or small on a daily basis as my confidence grows within them, and my trust in myself and ability to handle them.
6) Use the 5,4,3,2,1 countdown rule.
Mel Robbins developed an incredible rule to help you take action for what you want. When you’re feeling nervous about what you’re about to do and on the edge, countdown from 5 to 1 to bring your nerves down and as you get to 1 physically shift yourself.
The key is we are all going through something in one way or another, so stay focused on you and what you need.
What I know to be true for me is that my past doesn’t define me, it shapes me. I choose not to be stuck in the past and instead help myself to move forwards. My biggest lesson in life and what I take with me every single day is to always take action, to step into courage no matter how hard the situation is because I know I can handle it. We need to step into courage to create unstoppable confidence. Step into it today, no matter where you are. Because YOU CAN DO IT!
Bottom Line: Ultimately, it's important to get yourself out there. To get yourself doing things first by taking the first step. It’s so easy to over think yourself out of it because never having ran and thinking about running a whole marathon is unimaginable. However by starting with running 1km is more reasonable. Apply this thought process to everything you’re learning and take action.
