Dolomites Guide: Best Hikes in Cortina d’Ampezzo
August 13 2023 / Travel
This summer was an absolute eye-popping adventure in the Dolomites – cascading waterfalls, rock wonders, and vistas that made my jaw drop. Seriously, "Wooooow" was practically my theme song! But here's the scoop – I turned into a hiking machine this season, and guess what? The Dolomites stole the spotlight as my numero uno destination. Oh, and the drives? Let's just say, they deserve their own round of applause – towns, mountains, and those winding roads were like a journey of their own. Now, onto the main event – the hikes! From moderate strolls to a few that'll give your heart a workout, these trails are pure gold. You'll need a decent fitness foundation, but here's the secret sauce: go at your own pace. These majestic peaks aren't going anywhere, so why not take a moment to let the scenery soak in? Now, drumroll, please – five of my all-time favourite Dolomite hikes, handpicked with love and an extra sprinkle of "can't-wait-to-go-back" magic!
Lago Di Braies to Seekofel, 2810m
Auronzo - Rifugio Tre Cime - Cadini Di Misurina (Viewpoint) Loop
Lago di Sorapis
Tre Cime Di Laverado Loop
Rifugio Cinque Torri - Rifugio Credo Da Lago
Lago Di Braies to Seekofel, 2810m
Distance: 15.6km
Elevation Gain: 1524m
Difficulty: Intermediate to Advanced
Hold onto your hiking boots, because I've got a tale that's as wild as the mountains themselves! So, let's talk about this hike – no favouritism, but it totally stole my heart. Picture this: a lake that's like a drop of sapphire heaven, shifting colours from dawn's first light to midday's glory and even evening's reflection dance. Believe me, it's a show-stopper.
Now, let's rewind. As we stepped in, crowds buzzed around for a quick 5km loop – but we, my friend, we’re up for more. Off into the valley we marched, the ascent ahead a path of loose stones and rock playground. Secure those kicks, 'cause they'll save your day! And oh boy, the vistas that played peekaboo with us were worth every step. The weather? It was on our side, high-fiving us with clear skies and sun-kissed joy.
But hold onto your hats, 'cause surprise! Snow had other plans for us, a better fate than rain, right? Pushing forward, we faced the ascent like conquerors, only to be embraced by a snow hug (and that view, a sight for the gods!). There it was, Seekofel's peak, 2810m above ordinary life. Can you imagine those shots? Clouds granted us a sneak peek, but then the grand snowstorm crashed the party, tossing us a rainbow gift before the skies cleared, sun shining like it never left.
And here's the challenge flag, waving high – this hike? You better have it on your adventure A-list. Once we conquered, it was time to camp like champs. Camper van owners, lend me your ears: this spot, it's the jackpot. Park for 7 euros, camp for another 5 euros (yeah, it's a steal!). Night descended, and the sky? Oh, it wore stars like diamonds, with a crescent moon winking like a secret shared.

2. Auronzo - Tre Cime - Cadini Di Misurina (viewpoint)
Distance: 10.7km
Elevation Gain: 735m
Difficulty: Moderate
Guess what? We cracked the parking code this time around – no 30 euros needed! Right before those gatekeepers could demand their fee, we snuck in a parking spot on the left, totally free of charge. Clever, right? We kicked off by hiking up to the sensational Tre Cime, and from there, it was like a grand adventure towards the iconic Cadini Di Misurina viewpoint. And oh boy, did it deliver! The best part? This route was like a walk in the park, with paths as friendly as your neighbour's dog. As you conquer the heights, brace yourself for a parade of tourists at the top – yup, the crowd's part of the package deal. But don't sweat it; just time your star moment. And speaking of time, when you're up there, don't forget to pause. Let the world rush by as you drink in those mountains tumbling down like a cascade – nature's magic, really.
Now, here's the secret handshake: that viewpoint is worth every step. But (and there's always a but), be a trailblazer on those ridges and narrow paths – a little extra caution is the name of the game. Adventure on, my friend!

3. Lago di Sorapis
Distance: 13.5km
Elevation Gain: 659m
Difficulty: Moderate
Get ready for an adventure that's as beautiful as it is bold! This hike takes you by the renowned Lago di Sorapis and its friendly neighbour, the rifugio (a fancy word for mountain hut, and a perfect lunch pit stop, might I add!). Brace yourself for a climb that's like a rollercoaster for your heart – up, down, and all around the peaks of those neighbouring mountains. Trust me, the sweat is worth it when you catch those jaw-dropping views from the summit! Now, let's talk about Lago di Sorapis – it's like a real-life gem with its milky blue waters and a backdrop that could make a postcard jealous. If I had to pick, it's my absolute fave among the Dolomite lakes – a must-visit, no doubt! Here's a pro tip for your journey: kick things off early to outsmart the crowds and relish a serene path. Speaking of crowds, this place is a hot ticket, so an early bird move could earn you that legendary shot everyone's after. One more thing – the lake is off-limits for swimming, so be a nature lover and keep your toes out of the water. If you spot someone thinking about a dip, give 'em a friendly heads-up too!

4. Tre Cime di Laverado Loop
Distance: 11.5km
Elevation Gain: 564m
Difficulty: Moderate
Get ready for a Dolomite delight – the Tre Cime di Lavaredo loop hike is like the crown jewel of walks, impossible to overlook! Imagine a circle dance around three majestic peaks that's practically a postcard scene. And guess what? Along the way, there are four mountain huts that pop up like refuelling stations – a perfect pit stop for hikers. But here's the cherry on top: an extra leg to the mind-boggling Misurina viewpoint. Trust me, it's my absolute favourite vista in the Dolomites. From there, it's like Mother Nature put on a grand show, displaying the wildest and most dramatic peaks like a gallery of rugged art. Pssst... a little secret for success – if you're gunning for a parking spot, beat the sun to the punch and get there within 30 minutes of the gates opening. We spent 30 euros to zoom up the hill and park up top, setting the stage for our unforgettable hike.

5. Rifugio Cinque Torri - Rifugio Credo Da Lago
Distance: 21km
Elevation Gain: 1281m
Difficulty: Moderate - Intermediate
Embarking on this adventure might not require you to be a mountaineer, but don't underestimate the real challenge - it's not about the rugged terrain, but the whopping 21km stretch we eagerly took on! Let me tell you, though, every step of this journey is like opening a treasure chest. Picture this: you're setting off, scaling up to the legendary Cinque Torri zone, where these five monumental rock towers stand like ancient guardians. Oh, and there's a rifugio, a cozy mountain hut, just casually chilling nearby. But here's the kicker - this area is like a time capsule brimming with war remnants. They've crammed so much history here that it's like stumbling into an "open-air museum." Take your sweet time soaking in the stories as you explore this plateau, and trust me, you'll be a history buff by the time you're done. Need a breather? No worries, a gondola's got your back - whisking you directly to Cinque Torri if your legs need a spa day. Feeling sprightly? Well, my friend, let the path unfurl beneath your feet as you venture forth, traversing Passo Giau and soaking in views that'd make your phone's wallpaper jealous.
