Conquering the Unknown: My Hyrox Singapore Adventure

Last weekend, I embarked on an exhilarating journey into the world of event racing, taking on the extraordinary challenge known as Hyrox. With a group of friends enthusiastically signed up for the event, I found myself teetering on the edge, uncertain if I had what it took to dive into this adrenaline-pumping experience. In true Lizzie fashion, I made a spontaneous decision to join, registering for the event just three weeks before the big day.

I've always considered myself reasonably fit, possessing a solid foundation of fitness, which made me believe I was 'fit enough' for various physical challenges. However, I wasn't about to underestimate the sheer intensity of the Hyrox challenge. To prepare adequately, I had a mere two weeks to build up my endurance, establish a sustainable running pace, and become acquainted with the unique strength and movement requirements of the race.

Let me take you through my journey and the valuable lessons I gathered along the way.

1. The 'JFDI' Motto: Just F*cking Do It

I've always lived by the 'JFDI' motto, which stands for "Just F*cking Do It." It's a powerful philosophy that encourages taking bold leaps in the face of uncertainty. As I stood at the starting line, it became my guiding light, reminding me that I didn't need to be the fastest or the strongest; I just needed the courage to begin.

The 'JFDI' attitude was my constant companion during the race. It pushed me through moments of doubt and fatigue, urging me to keep moving forward. Hyrox, with its unique blend of physical and mental challenges, underscored the importance of this mindset. Sometimes, the most significant victories lie beyond our comfort zones.

2. Learn to Pace Yourself

Hyrox is not just about physical capacity; it's a strategic game. Knowing when to push and when to hold back is key. I listened to advice from friends who had tackled Hyrox before, which helped me manage my energy effectively.

3. Focus and Face Discomfort Head-On

In this race, it's crucial not to ignore or suppress the pain and discomfort. I learned to confront these sensations head-on, accepting them as part of the challenge.

4. Positive Self-Talk and Mental Preparation

I continued my knowledge and experience with the power of self-coaching through each station. What I said to myself mattered, and the mental preparation in training proved invaluable on race day. At Hyrox, there are no headphones allowed, so I practiced without them to get used to the voice in my head guiding me through.

5. Discover Your Capabilities

I reminded myself that I am incredibly capable, and no obstacle can deter me. I maintained my curiosity and kept pushing boundaries.

6. One Step at a Time

I focused on putting one foot in front of the other, concentrating on my journey, while others rushed off like rockets. It was a lesson in pacing and patience.

7. Have Fun

Hyrox wasn't just about the race; it was about the overall experience. I had a blast with friends from Bali and reconnected with familiar faces in Singapore. I absorbed the sounds, the sensations, and the adrenaline.

In hindsight, Hyrox was a brilliantly organized event, and I'm thrilled I took the leap. Even though I "winged it" in terms of preparation, I had an incredible amount of fun on race day.

If you're sitting on the fence about participating in an event due to fear or doubts about your fitness, remember this: there's never a "right" time. You just have to put yourself out there and go for it.

As for me, I'll be back to conquer Hyrox once more, armed with the knowledge of my personal best time to beat. The lesson is clear: the most remarkable adventures often begin with a leap into the unknown. So, embrace the 'JFDI' attitude and see where it takes you!

When the going gets tough, the tough gets going!

Bottomline: The 'JFDI' motto, "Just F*cking Do It," has been my life's guiding principle. It's a powerful reminder that sometimes, the best way to conquer uncertainty and hesitation is to take that bold leap of faith. When facing the physical demands and mental challenges of Hyrox, this philosophy became my north star.

As I stood at the starting line, I embraced the 'JFDI' attitude. It wasn't about being the fastest or the strongest; it was about having the courage to try. This motto reminded me that perfection wasn't the goal; it was all about taking that first step and giving it everything I had.

During the race, when doubt and fatigue threatened to take over, 'JFDI' became my mantra. I pushed through the pain, reminded myself why I'd signed up, and focused on moving forward, step by step.

Hyrox, with its unique blend of running and functional fitness challenges, truly tested my 'JFDI' mindset. It emphasized that some of life's most significant victories are found beyond our comfort zones. To conquer the unknown, take risks, and push limits is where personal growth thrives. I may not have crossed the finish line first, but I conquered the event, and that, in itself, was a remarkable achievement.

In the end, I discovered that Hyrox was more than a race; it was a journey of self-discovery, resilience, and unwavering determination. So, my message to you is clear: When facing a challenge, embrace the 'F*cking Do It' mentality – you might be surprised at what you can achieve.

In summary, my Hyrox experience in Singapore was unforgettable. Despite my last-minute decision and limited preparation, I had a blast on race day. If you're sitting on the fence, hesitating because you're uncertain or feel unprepared, remember this: there's never a "right" time. Don't hold back; take the leap and just go for it. As for me, I'll be back to tackle Hyrox again, and this time, I have a time to beat!
